Mike Newhouse, CEO of Impyre and Internet marketing speaker always speaks about his motorcycling experiences in comparison to online marketing because of the twists and turns and the high speeds at which the Internet is rapidly changing. Well I have a slightly different comparison.
I wake up every morning and look out my window to a very busy road. You just have to love rush hour traffic in Dallas, right? I think that the purposes of SEO are similar to the purposes of everyone who drives to Dallas every morning. They are all (for the most part) trying to get to the same location, downtown Dallas. And they are all racing between each other to get to Dallas as fast as possible.
So how does this compare to SEO? Think about it, you have everyone competing to get to the same position on Google – page 1 preferably spot 1. The truth is it takes a long time. Some of our clients don’t see the results they want to see in the first month because they are not quite on the front page yet. As SEOs, we see that rankings are increasing meaning with more work the website will have enough content and links appear on the front page. I consistently pull reports displaying the ranking of a website to determine what I have done correct the previous week and what I did wrong. Yes, I have done changes that cause rankings to go down but I also record everything to make sure that I can reverse those adverse results.
The truth of the matter is, no one knows the exact algorithm to rank well on Google, Bing, and Yahoo – we only make educated guesses. And I will be the first to admit that one of my changes did not work how I had intended.
So what do I do when a page goes down in ranking? I make sure that I have recorded literally every change in text on the website from alt text, title tags, header tags, etc. I do this even for just one word… even one letter! I record every link I build. I record every blog post I have written. I record everything! This allows me to reverse what I have done the previous week.
I have consistently discussed how different Impyre is from others. This is yet another thing I think we do well that others just do not do. Being able to correct your own mistakes is key to SEO.
